Migraine is no more a headache


Migraine is a condition in which the patient suffers from headaches. The headaches can be mild or severe in intensity. It is a nervous system disease. Migraine causes sensory problems like light flashes, tingling and blind spots. Some patients feel aura along with pain in the head. Aura causes disturbances like confusion of thoughts, strange and flashing lights, pricking of pins in the limbs, muscle stiffness and unpleasant smells. The main cause of this disorder is environmental factors. It can be a hereditary condition, which a person inherits from parents. Migraine can be due to fluctuation of hormones. Intake of foods that contain tyramine can cause migraine. Consuming foods like chocolate, caffeine, onion, processed meats, pickles, peanut butter, banana and aspartame can cause migraine.

Symptoms Of Migraine
The most common symptom of migraine is pulsating pain in the head lasting for two to seventy two hours. Mostly, the patient does not have headache in complete head but only in half portion. The pain increases on doing physical activity. There is nausea and vomiting. The patient has altered mood and irritability. The patient becomes sensitive to light and sound. There is depression, fatigue and visual disturbance. Muscles in the body become very stiff. Some patients have constipation and diarrhea. These symptoms cause interference in the daily life, due to which the patient cannot do the normal activities like working and sleeping.

Treatment Of Migraine
The treatment of this disease is done by giving analgesics like ibuprofen to the patient. Some other useful medicines for migraine are paracetamol, naproxen and Excedrin. If the patient has nausea, antiemetic medicines are given. If the patient does not improve with analgesics, triptans and ergotamines are given. Adopting good lifestyle habits can help in preventing and treating migraine. Doing physical exercise and getting proper sleep is very important. The patient should drink water and take steps to decrease and avoid stress. Avoid foods that trigger attack.

Prevention Of Migraine
Migraine can be prevented by avoiding triggers that cause the condition. Medicines also help in preventing migraine. Take beta-blocker drugs like blocadren and lopressor. Take antidepressants medicines like elavil and effexor. Take antiepileptic drugs like depacon and topamax. If the problem is due to menstrual problems, take triptan medicines like frova. Take botox treatment for preventing chronic migraines. Some herbs like butterbur and cannabis help in preventing migraine. Some vitamins like riboflavin and Vitamin B12 can be taken. Vision correction and visualization techniques are very helpful. Some patients benefit by self-hypnosis and acupuncture. Eating foods that are gluten free also helps in preventing migraine.
