Many us suffer from stomach cramps and the stomach all of a sudden gets all gassy after we eat ice cream or any cheese product. It is a feeling like your stomach is upset and you might have diarrhea. Do you also feel like this when you eat mashed potatoes or milk or candy? Well if you feel these symptoms then you might be suffering from lactose intolerance.

Lactose is nothing but main sugar in milk and in most of the dairy products. The small intestine makes the lactase enzyme which helps in the digestion of sugar. When you suffer from lactose intolerance, you basically do not make enough of lactase to digest the lactose well. There is no proper medication to this problem, but some change in your food consumption can probably reduce it.

Tons of Americans suffer from lactose intolerance. The symptoms of lactose intolerance are bloating, stomach cramps, painful gas, nausea and diarrhea. For starters what you can do is understand and make a note of what food consumption causes you more pain. Then simply avoid eating that food. Or see a doctor for a better advice. There could be a chance that you may be sensitive to just small amounts of lactose food. The symptoms could also be mild or severe. It is basically different for every person.

But the best known products that give this problem are milk and other dairy products. But there are some non dairy products that have protein called casein contains some traces of lactose. Best way to avoid lactose problems, see the food packet what it says before purchasing or consuming it. Avoid food like curd, dry milk solids, milk, milk products, dry milk powder and whey. And for those who are extremely sensitive to lactose intolerance, they should avoid eating baked goods, bread, breakfast cereals, milk chocolates, instant food, mashed potatoes, soups, margarine, non dairy whipped processing, protein bars, salad dressing and non dairy creamers.

It is likely that your doctor may ask you to keep a diary of the food that you eat. This because it will be easy to note what causes lactose intolerance. Do the hydrogen breath test. Generally, people have very little hydrogen in their breath. If your body doesn’t digest lactose, though, hydrogen builds in your intestines, and after a while it’s in your breath. This test measures how much hydrogen is in your breath after you have a lactose-loaded drink several times in a few hours. If your levels are high 3 to 5 hours later, your body does not digest lactose well.

LTT is lactose tolerance test. When our body breaks down lactose it starts releasing sugar in our blood. This test simply shows how much sugar is the blood. After you fast, a small sample of blood is taken. Then, you drink a liquid that is high in lactose. Two hours later they ask for another blood sample. Because lactose causes blood sugar levels to rise, your blood sugar levels in this sample should be higher. If you’re lactose intolerant, you’ll have just a low rise in blood sugar and symptoms.
